May, and Freelance Business Week (#FBW) will be here faster than we realize, which means … it’s time to meet our first city coordinators – Liza Wisner and Lauren Lavender from Corpus Christi! I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Liza (pronounced LEE-za) and Lauren to learn how they decided to work together and what #FBW Corpus Christi means to them.
#FREECON: How did you two meet?
Liza: We were both working at AXOM Foundry, a coworking space in Corpus. Lauren, being an event planner, and I started working together on a reciprocal partnership and it’s taken off from there.
Lauren: We’ve worked together on other projects, so it just makes sense that this would be our next step.
#FREECON: What is it about Corpus Christi that makes it a natural fit for #FBW?
Lauren: There’s an energy in Corpus, something that’s tangible. There’s so much potential. It’s exciting because, even though we’re not as progressive as San Antonio and Austin yet, the freelance community here just makes you want to grab hold of the energy and incorporate it into everything you do.
Liza: It’s about helping freelancers in Corpus to network, and feeding off that connective energy. For the first time, freelancers are coming out of their homes and being set free to build their businesses together.
#FREECON: What programs are you presenting during #FBW Corpus Christi in May that excite you the most?
Liza: Tech Tuesday is going to be wonderful. We’re partnering with the University of the Incarnate Word to teach freelancers how to automate their businesses. Plus, we’re working with the Small Business Development Center to cross promote our programs along with theirs during Small Business Week.
Lauren: Last year, we only had a few days of programming. This year, 2019, we have a whole week of programming. There are more opportunities for freelancers to take advantage of 1:1 mentoring, networking, and even pitching to investors in a speed-dating format. The goal of #FBW Corpus Christi is to support and build the freelance community in Corpus Christi, and this is the first step toward that growth.
Thank you, ladies. We can’t wait to hear more as the time gets closer!
#FBW Corpus Christi runs from May 6 to May 10, 2019, presenting 5-days of creative sessions made up of workshops, fireside chats, talks, and panel discussions focused on the local freelance business community. All programs are designed to build freelance business, celebrate accomplishments and bust through whatever roadblocks you are facing.
FREELANCE BUSINESS WEEK (#FBW) events are local community-focused events. The local coordinators will pull together the best local speakers to create multiple days of talks, workshops, panel discussions and fireside chats, along with a local Ignite Freelance event and more. One of our missions at #FREECON is to connect freelance business owners to solutions and resources to help them build their business, some of the best options are found right in our own neighborhoods.
